The inheritance of color and texture is a very exciting world of genetics that can be influenced in a very specific way through breeding. The entire coat color palette of our dogs is formed by just two different color pigments: eumelanin, the black pigment, and pheomelanin, the red pigment.

But how does the colorful variety of coat colors of different breeds come about? It’s all a question of genetics. In the lecture, you will learn how a total of around 50 known different positions in the dog genome influence the color. Every dog carries all of these genes, but only certain genes are actually used for the coat color. The selection of which color genes in a dog are involved in the color is determined by the gene combination, which adheres to a certain sequence (known as a hierarchy). A comprehensive overview of basic inheritance that will amaze you and make you act accordingly.

Her academic career began with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Bayreuth, which she completed in November 2008. She continued her studies with a Master’s degree in Molecular Ecology at the same university, which she finished in May 2011. Her Master’s thesis dealt with the composition of fungal communities in a beech forest.

After completing her Master’s degree, she worked as a research assistant at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel in the field of molecular phytopathology from June 2011 to July 2012. In August 2012, she began her PhD studies in Molecular Cardiology at the University Hospital of Ulm, which she completed in April 2017. Her dissertation dealt with the role of the Mediator complex subunit Med12 during the development of heart valves in zebrafish.

Since June 2017, Dr. Segert has headed the laboratory and the research and development department of FERAGEN GmbH in Salzburg. In this position, she is responsible for planning and organizing genetic diagnostics, customer consulting, quality management and expanding the test portfolio.
