The lecture comprehensively covers the topic of mammary tumors in dogs. A central point is the structure of the mammary gland tissue. Knowledge of this anatomy is important for understanding tumor development.
Regarding the definition and histological classification of tumors, the different tissue types and their malignancy are explained. Tumors are classified according to their tissue of origin and their dignity, with cellular atypia and growth patterns being crucial.
The lecture also highlights the symptoms of mammary tumors, including various signs. Treatment options primarily involve surgical interventions, currently considered the only generally accepted form of therapy. Dr. Kessler also addresses prognosis and factors affecting success. Another focus is the influence and timing of spaying and the associated risks.
Preoperative diagnostics also play a role. This includes clinical examination and histological analysis to determine the malignancy of the tumors. Contraindications for surgery are discussed in detail.
The lecture cites theses and studies that explore the relationship between tumor size and malignancy, as well as the role of spaying in tumor prevention. Finally, the importance of early detection and prompt surgical intervention is emphasized to ensure the best possible prognosis.
