In the future, knowledge and attention to genetic diversity will play a very important role in responsible, health-oriented dog breeding for both individual breeders and club populations.

The webinar is suitable for both new breeders and for refreshing and updating knowledge. The aim of the webinar is to provide an introduction to the topic. Practical examples will be used to show how the results can be transferred to breeding and how to work with this tool. Simple, understandable and to the point.

Until now, it was not possible for us to determine a dog’s complete diversity based on its genetics. Thanks to diversity screening and the analysis of thousands of more than 200,000 genetic markers, we can now do this in a very comprehensive and meaningful way.

When mating is planned, it is a common practice to use pedigrees to find out possible family relationships or common ancestors of the breeding partners. Based on the genetic data from the diversity screening, relationships can be calculated independently of pedigrees. In addition, the values determined also provide an informative overview of the inbreeding level of a breed or individual dogs.

The findings from the screening also allow the calculation of so-called genomic inbreeding coefficients (also independent of pedigrees), which can be calculated for different generations up to a maximum of 50 generations back.

Dr. mag. Anja Geretschläger (Austria)

Dr. Mag. Anja Geretschläger is a renowned scientist and entrepreneur in the field of veterinary genetic research in Austria. She is the founder and owner of Feragen, a specialized laboratory for genetic testing in animals.

Anja Geretschläger began her academic career with a degree in natural sciences and focused on genetics early on. After graduating with a master’s degree, she further deepened her knowledge in a doctoral program in which she specialized in genetic research in the veterinary field. Her expertise and passion for genetics ultimately led to the founding of Feragen.

Under her leadership, Feragen has developed into a leading provider of genetic testing for animals. The laboratory offers a wide range of services, including ancestry testing, testing for genetic diseases and the determination of genetic traits. The aim is to support animal owners and breeders with precise genetic information to improve the health and well-being of animals. This work is supported by a variety of high-quality specialist lectures.

Dr. Geretschläger is known for her innovative work and her contribution to improving veterinary genetic diagnostics. She is a sought-after expert in her field and is also involved in science communication to raise awareness of the importance of genetic research in the veterinary field.
