Degenerative myelopathy is an incurable, irreversible disease that affects several breeds, including German Shepherds, Boxers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs. Its typical onset during the aging process requires a lot of strength and endurance from the owners when diagnosed and poses a particular challenge to breeders.

The lecture highlights the pitfalls of degenerative myelopathy and its impact on sports, breeding, and everyday life. It is a disease in which the white matter of the spinal cord slowly and progressively deteriorates. This leads to progressive gait disturbances that worsen over several months. This lecture will delve into the disease in detail, providing participants with an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic options and an insight into various differential diagnoses.
