The lecture offers a comprehensive introduction for breeders who are planning their first litter or those who want to refresh their basic knowledge. It covers the most important aspects of breeding preparation and implementation and provides practical assistance for the successful implementation of a litter.
First, the selection of breeding dogs is discussed, which covers the general health of the dogs, weight and feeding, the breed standard as well as specific and genetic examinations. The anatomical basics of male and female dogs are then explained. In the area of physiology, important differences between sexual maturity and breeding maturity, the female dog’s cycle and the male’s spermatogenesis are discussed. There is also an overview of determining the time of mating in order to identify the optimal time for mating. In cases of fertility problems, microbiological examination is discussed.
The lecture also explains the exact process of mating, including the phases of ejaculation. This is followed by the pregnancy examination, in which various methods and their temporal application are presented. A comprehensive overview of the course of pregnancy is given, including implantation, embryogenesis, fetal period and specific changes in the bitch. The optimal feeding during pregnancy is also discussed.
Another focus is on birth: The lecture covers the birth phases, necessary preparations, possible interventions during birth and important documentation. This is followed by information on the postpartum phase (puerperium), including special features and necessary aftercare.
The discussion of the neonatal phase addresses physiological characteristics, the development of puppies, the spatial design of the environment and the breeder’s tasks during this time. Feeding the bitch during lactation is also discussed in detail.
This lecture therefore offers a sound knowledge base for anyone who is aiming for a successful first breeding or who wants to deepen their existing knowledge.
